Kitchen Basics: Necessary Tools for Cooking Explained

One day, you wander into the kitchen and saw all these tools. What are they used for? What are they called? Well, we got you! Here are the necessary tools in the kitchen that you need to know.

Saucepans

Whether it’s for boiling or steaming, saucepans are what you need. It is also where you cook your pasta, grains, and of course, sauce (thus the name). You can also use this to cook your favorite Wei Wei balls and buns!

Skillet pans

Yes, skillet pans are frying pans. You can’t cook your fried egg without this. From frying to searing to sautéing, the skillet pan is what every kitchen needs. After all, isn’t frying the first cooking method that you mastered? Do you know that you can fry Wei Wei balls as well?

As the name says, you use this to make stocks, broths and soups for a large crowd. You can also cook your hotpot in here.

Wok

This is a big pan that has variety of uses but we usually use it to cook pancit. It can also be used for stir frying, steaming, deep frying, poaching, boiling, stewing, and making soup.

Colander

This is a bowl-shaped kitchen utensil with holes for draining food such as pasta and rice. You may also use this when washing vegetables.

Spatula

There are three types of spatula: the metal, the rubber, and the frosting spatula.

  • The metal one is used to flip, scrape and serve. This is what we use when we fry pancakes and eggs.
  • The rubber one is most commonly used in baking. It is used to scrape the batter for transfer to a baking pan.

Knives

There are several types of knives out there and they all differ in what they are used for. But the kitchen must-haves are these four:

  • Chef knife or cook’s knife has a long, broad blade with a straight edge. It is widest across the heel with a finely pointed tip. It is used for chopping and dicing vegetables. It is also used for cutting thicker and harder foods like potatoes and onions.
  • Utility knife is similar to the chef knife, but smaller and slimmer. If you are going to dice or mince smaller food items, this is what you should use.
  • Paring knife has a short, slim, evenly sized blade with a pointed tip. It is used to cut, chop and slice fruits and vegetables. It is also used to peel, trim and remove seeds from fruits and vegetables.

  • Bread knife has a long, evenly sized blade with a sharp serrated edge. This is used to cut through softer food, like bread, baguettes and cakes, without crushing them out of shape.

Chopping board

They often come in wood or plastic of different sizes. It is a durable board on which you place materials for cutting. Remember that it is recommended to have separate boards for vegetables, meats and fish to avoid cross contamination.

This is used to transfer food from one place to another. It is also used to flip, rotate or retrieve food from areas that are too hot, e.g. hotdog on pan. It can either be made of steel, wood, nylon, aluminum or other heat-resistant materials.

Measuring spoons and cups
